A colourful little bolthole inspired by the surrounding landscape. Referencing the soft yellows of summer harvest and sunshine in the bedroom; blues of the sea and sky; and the deep earthy green of the land that we farm here.

We’ve carefully stripped back this traditional farm worker’s cottage to install modern and efficient technology, like the air source heat pump that gently warms the wooden floorboards from underneath. Much of the original joinery and fittings have been preserved, re-laid and skilfully repaired. So you’ll find some nods to the cottage’s history as one of the older properties in the village, with all the benefit of modern comfort.

The cottage has one bedroom with a king-size Ercol bed and ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower. Enjoy cosy evenings in front of the log burner in the living room where you’ll also find a built-in dining nook, its fitted benches upholstered in raw linen and bespoke table made using locally-sourced cedar. The kitchen comes with everything you’ll need to rustle up good food.

Outside, we have converted two outhouses (one each at Calder and Turner) to create glazed ‘Reading Rooms’ so you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings and all of the elements with a comfortable place to sit, sheltered and insulated by thick stone walls. A tiny little place that is all your own, with a private view of the bay.

The garden has been designed to be wildlife-friendly with a varied mixture of grasses and diverse nectar-rich flowers. In the summer months, it is meadow-like and blends seamlessly with the landscape beyond.

Views

The views from Turner cottage speak for themselves. The garden rolls seamlessly into ancient pasture that is part of our farm, grazed by our livestock.

Beyond is Embleton Bay with Dunstanburgh Castle in view to the south. The bay is a short 10-minute walk from the cottage at Embleton, down Sea Lane and onto the dunes, then endless coastal path in both directions.

The large living room window frames a fantastic view of the sea and ever-changing landscape. You can sit in the garden, or watch the day roll by from the Reading Room.

We have also installed a ‘stargazing bench’ at the bottom of the garden, in partnership with the Northumberland Coast National Landscape team. The bench has been specially designed for lying back, looking up and enjoying some of the darkest, clearest and most awe-inspiring skies in the country.

Out and About

Step out of the door at Turner Cottage and walk down to Embleton Bay in less than 15 minutes, renowned as a beautiful stretch of sand with the iconic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle to the right, and the tiny village of Low Newton to the left where you’ll find The Ship in the square.

Walking beyond the castle takes you to Craster, famed for its kippers and picturesque harbour.

Embleton is a perfectly situated base for exploring north Northumberland, with all of the coastal route easily accessed and, inland, hills and countryside seeped in history and tradition.
